At present, common navigational instruments include azimuth systems such as direction finder and Consor, and hyperbolic systems such as Roland, Deca, Omega, and Meridian navigation. They have their own advantages and disadvantages, and can be used together to complement each other, but they cannot replace each other. The ideal positioning system has yet to be developed. It requires global, all-weather, self-contained, passive, complete reliability and high precision. Omega and Meridian navigation systems were once known as the two major achievements of navigation technology since the 1960s, but they both only have some of the above conditions. The new satellite navigation system in the United States that will be officially put into use in the late 1980s is called the GPS global positioning system. It can be positioned continuously , and the accuracy is higher than that of the Meridian navigator system. It is a new technical achievement that is a step forward towards the ideal positionin g system.

In addition, nautical instruments also include meteorological and hydrological observation instruments, such as barometers, wet and dry thermometers, and anemometers.

As the navigational instruments are of great significance to ensure the safety of navigation, the relevant resolutions adopted by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and the International Maritime Organization have separately stipulated the installation and performance standards of the navigational instruments.
